The Course

The course structure of practical work in all three years follows the same programme of study. Our aims are to provide the broadest possible training and to educate the students to think and act as professionals.

1st Year

Students enter the course with a range of different skills and experiences, so the first year is dedicated to introducing a clear understanding of technique. This awareness will enable the students to strengthen their knowledge and development.

2nd Year

Students build on the ideas and intentions of the first year, focusing more intensively on the development of technique. Students are also encouraged to explore performance skills, allowing the individual’s personality, confidence and style to emerge.

3rd Year

Performance is the key word for the whole of this year being an integral part of every class, whilst continuing to reinforce good technique. Students are expected to work as professionals, guided by the college to audition and gain employment within the industry.

Boys

Each year the college is on the look out for young men that have the drive and determination to be successful within the performing arts industry. The college has its own fully equipped gym as well as timetabled male only classes. This provides more specialised training focusing on the specific factors that the male dancer and performer require for the business. Full Scholarships are available for some male students.

Assessments

Assessments take place twice a year. This is to ensure that the students are performing to their full potential in all areas and achieving the standard required. Internal assessments are carried out by LCPA tutors and external assessments by visitors from the profession.

Examinations

Examinations take place at the end of each term. This is an important part of the training and is encouraged.  Students study BTDA British Theatre Dance Association (BTDA) Vocational Examinations, culminating in the BTDA Level 4 Diploma in Theatre Dance. Students may also study London College of Music (LCM) Examinations in Music Theatre.

Teacher Training

BTDA offers a Certificate in Dance Teaching. Further information is available from the college.

The summer production reflects the wide breadth of teaching and talent of LCPA. It involves a dynamic and eclectic selection of performances. The show also acts as a showcase for the graduates with agents, choreographers and directors invited to the performance.

Students also have the opportunity to work in affiliated productions throughout the year.
